What would you like to know?

The Index is a score out of 100 that is calculated by combining responses to a core set of 44 questions from the survey across the five pillars. The maximum score is 100, being the best possible outcome for each pillar, and it provides a relative measure that can be used to identify priorities for improvement, track trends and compare groups.

You are able to dig into the data directly, manipulating the datasets with our interactive data tool. This allows you to filter down to what you’re most interested in. We have created a helpful video to walk you through the data tool.

Fieldwork was conducted slightly earlier in 2023 to allow for more reporting time, and ran from the 17th to 28th May 2023.  An additional wave of fieldwork was completed from 20th to the 25th of July to replace some data that had been identified as poor quality.  Responses from both waves of fieldwork were compared and no significant differences were seen between data collected over the two different periods.

In 2022, a number of improvements were made to the quantitative study based on learnings from the first year of the DYI in 2021. One important change has been the questions which are used to calculate index scores both at a total level, and at individual pillar level, which therefore means that the index scores are purely indicative and not directly comparable between 2021 and 2022.

In addition to an online study, we completed several offline interviews with young people who had limited access to the internet in 2022. We chose not to repeat this in 2023 due to the challenges in sourcing truly offline young people via a quantitative approach. Year on year, we will continue to seek the most effective ways to include the most hard-to-reach respondents
